This cushion cover in red velvet, woven with metallic threads and with decorative floral and geometrical motifs exemplifies the typically Turkish cushion cover. The centre is decorated with a large, stylised floral composition and the borders filled with carnations and tulips, elements frequently used in the decoration of velvets at that time.
The rectangular velvet cushion covers, with two symmetrical borders at the ends, are a constant in the production of valuable Turkish velvets of the period manufactured at two important textile centres, Bursa and Istanbul. The main centre for trade was Bursa and the velvets were transported from there to the Orient and to Europe where they greatly influenced Italian textile production.
